The competition kicked off with the Dominicans facing the Venezuelans while Mexico took on Cuba in the first six hours of the series. The Cubans walked away in a shine of glory with a 6-4 win, although suffering an injury to one of their strongest batters, Alfredo Despaigne.

"In the playoffs in Cuba, I suffered a muscle strain and now it bothered me more, that's why I decided not to play now to give me treatment and be able to play the missing games," Despaigne told ESPN.
