On Saturday the Prime Minister of Haiti, Laurent Lamothe, resigned his post in the midst of anti-government protests saying he leaves “with a feeling of accomplishment.”

Laurent Lamothe was born in Port-au-Prince on August 14, 1972. He is the son of Luis Lamothe, the founder of the Lope de Vega Institute, and of Ghislaine Fortuney, a painter and sculptor. Lamonthe was raised in an academic, artistic, and athletic household, even going on to represent Haiti in the Davis Cup in 1994 and 1995.

The Haitian politician received a bachelor's degree in political science from Barry University in Miami and later studied business management. He completed a master degree with honors in business administration from Saint Thomas University.

Lamonthe founded the telecommunications company Global Voice Group and in 2008, he received the “Businessperson of the year” award from Ernst and Young for having introduced telecommunications management technologies to Africa.

Beginning his political career as a special adviser to Haitian President Michel Martelly, he later went on to be a member of the Interim Commission for the Reconstruction of Haiti.

In September 2011 he co-chaired – together with former U.S. president Bill Clinton – the Presidential Advisory Council for Economic Development and Investment with the aim of rebuilding Haiti.

In October 2011, in Haiti, he gave his first speech as Minister of Foreign Relations.

In March 2012, President Michel Martelly named him Prime Minister of Haiti, following the resignation of former Prime Minister, Garry Conille. A month later, the Senate approved his nomination and in May of that year he was officially installed as the Prime Minister of the country.

Resignation of Laurent Lamothe

This Sunday, Laurent Lamothe, announced his resignation in the midst of protests against the decision of President Martelly to suspend legislative and municipal elections scheduled for October, due to difficulties in organizing the vote.

In his resignation, Lamothe said that the country has undergone a profound and dynamic transformation, with real change in favor of the people.
