The U.S. military operation was not approved by Congress.

On Saturday, several Democratic U.S. lawmakers voiced opposition to the military strike that President Donald Trump launched against Iran and criticized the fact that it was not voted on by Congress.

“These strikes are a colossal mistake, and I pray they do not cost the lives of our sons and daughters in uniform and at embassies across the region,” Sen. Tim Kaine said.

The lawmaker, who described the military operation as “unnecessary and idiotic,” called for the Senate to vote on a war powers resolution to block the U.S. government’s ability to maintain a military conflict with Iran.

Democratic Sen. Andy Kim emphasized that “Americans do not want a war” and accused Trump of having initiated a conflict “in violation of the Constitution.”

“This is a war that has not been explained or justified to the American people. We can support the democratic movement and the Iranian people without sending our troops to die,” said Sen. Ruben Gallego, who recalled losing friends in the 2003 Iraq War.

Early Saturday, Trump — whose administration had been negotiating a nuclear deal with Iran — announced the launch of a large-scale military operation aimed at bringing down the Iranian regime.

The U.S. military operation, however, was not submitted for a vote in Congress, which holds the authority to declare war.
