A group of 20 United States House of Representatives members, led by Congressman Jim McGovern, issued a statement rejecting Donald Trump’s administration for interfering in Colombia’s electoral process.
Th officials are accusing the president of publicly discrediting one candidate and endorsing another, actions the legislators called detrimental to the democratic rights of the Colombian people, according to the statement released coinciding with the US government’s suspension of a scheduled meeting between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Trump had voiced support for far‑right candidate Abelardo De la Espriella, who won 43 percent of the vote in the May 31 first round, while publicly discrediting his opponent Iván Cepeda of the ruling Historic Pact, who received 40 percent.
Meanwhile, the congressmen argued that such actions represent a negative intrusion into Colombia’s sovereignty, a country with which the U.S. has historically maintained a relationship of friendship and partnership. They expressed willingness to collaborate with whichever candidate wins the June 21 runoff.
The suspension of the Petro‑Mamdani meeting was justified by the U.S. government on the grounds that the encounter could violate conditions established for the Colombian president’s entry into US territory. The congressional statement, led by McGovern and backed by 19 other representatives, warned that endorsing or promoting any particular candidate tips the scales unfairly and harms Colombian democracy.
