“We fully support the efforts of the Venezuelan authorities to protect state sovereignty and national interests. We continue to provide the necessary support to friendly Venezuela and intend to strengthen all areas of our strategic partnership,” he said, as reported by the Russian outlet Izvestia.

Meanwhile, Venezuela’s ambassador to Moscow, Jesus Salazar, told the Russian media outlet Sputnik that the strategic partnership and cooperation treaty between his country and Russia remains in force.

“We have a strategic partnership and cooperation treaty signed by the presidents in May of last year and ratified by our parliaments, and it is in effect,” he said.

When asked whether there would be any change in relations between Caracas and Moscow in the context of the current situation, Salazar said Venezuela will continue “implementing what has been established in the treaty” with Russia “in all areas,” emphasizing that no foreign power can affect it.

Nebenzia also said Moscow will continue to support Havana by all means. “We are firmly determined to consistently develop bilateral cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of our countries and to strengthen international security and stability,” he said.

The diplomat added that the Russian people and government are united in defending national sovereignty against the “endless pressure” from the United States, while expressing confidence that the new package of unilateral U.S. sanctions will not break the Cuban spirit.
