“I held a conversation with UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo, whom I thanked for the organization’s willingness to support Venezuela in its response to the June 24 earthquakes.
We have activated the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA), a comprehensive evaluation that will make it possible to identify the country’s recovery and reconstruction needs.
We also requested UNDP support to promote programs in the areas of housing and education, as well as job training and employment programs for the affected communities.
We continue advancing international cooperation to support the efforts of the National Government on behalf of our people and national development,” she announced on social media.
Last week, the Venezuelan acting president met with United Nations Resident Coordinator Gianluca Rampolla and his team to strengthen comprehensive assistance for families affected by the twin earthquakes and coordinate international cooperation during this stage.
She also held talks with the U.S. State Department and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to “recover resources” that would allow for the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.
The Venezuelan government has been in contact with the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank, two multilateral institutions that have offered lines of credit and non-reimbursable cooperation to support the recovery process.
As part of these international efforts, Rodriguez announced the creation of an account at the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) to receive donations for the construction of housing.
On Sunday, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez provided an official update on figures related to the natural disaster. So far, the two earthquakes have left at least 3,342 people dead and 16,740 injured.
According to Venezuelan authorities, 17,345 people lost their homes, and 79 temporary camps have been established. Assessments have also determined that 856 buildings were damaged and 190 collapsed.
