Palestine Solidarity March Buenos Aires Shows Resilience Amid Repression

On August 30, 2025, between 3,000 and 4,000 people gathered in Buenos Aires to march in solidarity with the Palestinian people and condemn the genocide in the Gaza Strip. Organized by the Argentine Committee of Solidarity with the Palestinian People and supported by human rights, social, and political organizations, the protest carried the powerful slogan “Enough of genocide.” The demonstration traveled from the National Congress to the iconic Plaza de Mayo, in front of the Argentine government headquarters, marking a significant international visibility and denunciation of Israeli actions in Palestinian territories.

The march began with a peaceful yet determined atmosphere, reflecting deep commitment to Palestinian rights and condemnation of the ongoing blockade and bombings causing thousands of civilian casualties in Gaza. However, the protest was marred by police repression from the Buenos Aires City forces. Early in the procession, police attempted to detain a protester, sparking physical confrontations and tension.

A man identified as Fernando Iglesias was arrested and confined for hours in a police vehicle outside Comisaría Vecinal 1-B in downtown Buenos Aires. He was later released after a prosecutor intervened, refusing to validate his detention.

Organizers denounced police provocations including physical assaults, such as the beating of a participating retiree. These actions were part of an anti-picket protocol enforced by the City’s Security Minister Patricia Bullrich and were criticized as attempts to obstruct the right to peaceful protest.

Despite repression, the march proceeded to Plaza de Mayo. Public events there expressed unwavering solidarity with Palestinians and demanded the immediate severance of diplomatic ties between Argentina and Israel. Protesters also condemned Israeli plans to annex the West Bank and criticized the possible visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Argentina, highlighting perceived Argentine alignment with Israeli government policies.

This mobilization sits within the backdrop of escalating violence in Gaza, where Israeli attacks since October 2023 have resulted in over 63,000 deaths and approximately 158,000 injuries, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. These military actions have been condemned internationally as genocide, with multiple countries and organizations filing complaints before the International Court of Justice.

In Argentina, solidarity with Palestine is deeply rooted across various sectors including human rights groups, unions, student centers, and social movements. Recent months have seen a surge in solidarity committees across provinces, reflecting a growing public agenda for Palestine, even as the official Argentine position tends toward diplomatic support for Israel.

Protest organizers emphasize the need for ongoing demonstrations to pressure the international community to act decisively against the blockade and aggression, highlighting the severe humanitarian toll on women, children, the elderly, and civilians trapped under continuous bombardments.

Despite police interventions, the pro-Palestinian movement in Buenos Aires remains vibrant and mobilized, reaffirming a historic commitment to human rights and international justice. The large turnout and actions at Plaza de Mayo demonstrate that Palestine solidarity is a prominent force in Argentina’s social and cultural politics.

This event also underscores internal political tensions where government stances on Israeli relations clash with wider societal calls for justice and human rights advocacy. The march reaffirms calls for the global halt to violence and respect for international law, spotlighting responsibilities governments carry in protecting civilian populations and seeking lasting peace.

This Palestine Solidarity March in Buenos Aires on August 30, 2025, was a powerful act of resistance and international solidarity amid the deepening tragedy in Gaza. Despite facing police repression, thousands stood firm to denounce genocide and demand justice, placing the Palestinian cause firmly within Argentine social and political discourse. The march highlights global and regional stakes in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and demands urgent action for peace and human rights.
