The U.S. Department of Justice filed charges against him for ‘conspiracy’ to kill Americans.

On Friday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her disagreement with the criminal charges brought in the United States against former Cuban President Raul Castro, calling them a historic “interventionist” practice by Washington toward Latin America.

She stated that the self-determination of peoples must be respected and questioned the timing of the charges against Castro for events that occurred three decades ago, in 1996.

The U.S. Justice Deparment filed charges against Castro for “conspiracy” to kill Americans, destruction of aircraft, and murder, related to the downing of two civilian planes belonging to the “Brothers to the Rescue” organization.

Sheinbaum recalled the memoirs of former Mexican President Miguel de la Madrid to underscore that Washington has historically used the fight against drug trafficking as a pretext for political pressure on Latin American countries.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas signed the majority opinion that maintains that those who use property or assets “tainted by confiscation” are liable to U.S. citizens with rights to them.

The Mexican president clarified that, although Mexico maintains cooperation with the U.S. on security matters, the Constitution does not permit joint operations on national territory, establishing clear limits on sovereignty.

Sheinbaum emphasized that the priority is to preserve a stable relationship with Washington, where millions of Mexicans live, without forgetting the historical precedents of political pressure in the bilateral relationship.
