The death of former Uruguayan president José “Pepe” Mujica has stirred grief and reverence across the continent, with political leaders honoring his enduring legacy. Among them, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro praised Mujica’s lifelong dedication to Latin America’s social justice struggles.

In an official statement, President Maduro and First Combatant Cilia Flores extended condolences to Uruguay’s people and current president, Yamandú Orsi. “He courageously resisted dictatorships and championed humane policies during his presidency,”

President Maduro said, emphasizing Mujica’s role in fostering regional unity. The Venezuelan leader also sent solidarity to Mujica’s widow, Lucía Topolansky, calling him an “iconic figure of our Americas.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum joined the tributes, stating: “We deeply mourn Pepe Mujica—a global symbol of wisdom, progressive ideals, and humility.” She expressed sympathy for Mujica’s family and Uruguayans.

Colombia’s Gustavo Petro mourned via social media: “Pepe Mujica, the great revolutionary, has died. Farewell, my friend.” Petro echoed Mujica’s dream of a united Latin America, envisioning a “Grancolombian Union” as his legacy.

Uruguay’s President Yamandú Orsi bid an emotional farewell: “With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our comrade Pepe Mujica—leader, militant, and guiding light. We will miss you dearly, dear old friend. Thank you for your boundless love for our people.”
