Hundreds of thousands demand an end to genocide in Gaza around the world

Cities in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia were the scene of mobilizations to demand an end to the genocide in Gaza, denounce the blockade of the entry of humanitarian aid and demand international sanctions against Israel for war crimes and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian civilian population.

On the second anniversary of October 7, the date that marked the beginning of the current Israeli offensive in Gaza, solidarity with the Palestinian people and in repudiation of Tel Aviv was evidenced, for causing the greatest humanitarian crisis, of famine, unsanitary conditions and overcrowding in the southern end of the enclave, after months of bombardments and ground military operations.

In Geneva, about 200 people gathered in front of the UN headquarters despite the rain, denouncing “international inaction” in the face of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Events were also held in Zurich and Lausanne, with a strong presence of human rights groups.

In São Paulo, thousands marched down Paulista Avenue unfurling a giant Palestinian flag. The demonstrators demanded the severing of diplomatic relations with Israel and the release of Brazilian activists detained in the Sumud Global Flotilla.

 According to local media, there were at least 16 events in different cities of the country. In Sana’a, tens of thousands of people mobilized with huge Palestinian flags. Yemen has established itself as one of the countries with the highest number of pro-Palestinian protests in the last two years, being part of the axis of Resistance with its Ansar Allah movement.

Massive marches were held in the Pakistani cities of Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, called by the Jamaat-e-Islami party. Its leader, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, said that “one million people” participated in Karachi and Lahore. Another large mobilization is also being prepared in Peshawar.

In Amsterdam, police arrested more than 100 demonstrators who defied a ban on protesting in Dam Square. There were clashes with riot police, which made the Netherlands one of the scenes of greatest repression on the day.

In Copenhagen, more than 10,000 people marched in front of the Parliament. More than 100 organizations participated, including Greenpeace and Oxfam. The protesters demanded that Denmark recognize the Palestinian state and stop arms sales to Israel.

In London, students from King’s College and other universities marched with kufiyas and banners saying “Free Palestine.” Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the protests “un-British,” intensifying political pressure to restrict them. In Kuala Lumpur, vigils and marches were held outside the U.S. Embassy, in continuity with weeks of mobilizations in Southeast Asia.

Malaysia remains one of the most active countries in denouncing the blockade of Gaza. In Athens, collectives such as March to Gaza, Greece and BDS called for a “Day of Action”. There were protests in front of parliament and on tourist islands such as Zakynthos, where Israelis were denounced as buying property and a total arms embargo on Israel was demanded.

The Israeli offensive on Gaza, which began in October 2023, has left more than 67,000 Palestinians killed and nearly 170,000 wounded, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health and the United Nations. More than 90% of homes have been destroyed or damaged, and almost two million people are displaced in conditions of severe famine and health collapse.
