The new cabinet comprises 23 members, including 22 ministers and a deputy prime minister. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the approval was granted by the House of People’s Representatives, the lower house of the Ethiopian Parliament.

This approval marks the formal start of Abiy Ahmed’s new term and that of his government team. Among the most significant appointments is Fitsum Assefa, formerly Minister of Planning and Development, who will assume the role of Minister of Finance.

Her previous ministry was renamed the Ministry of National Strategy within the new government structure. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance plays a key role in the economic reforms championed by Abiy Ahmed aimed at liberalizing the economy.

He said these reforms also seek to attract private investment and manage debt restructuring through the G20 Common Framework. Abiy Ahmed was sworn in this week for a second five-year term as president of Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous country.

Another prominent figure in the new cabinet is Frehiwot Tamiru, former CEO of Ethio Telecom, the state-owned telecommunications company, who will assume the Ministry of Innovation and Technology.

The president’s Prosperity Party (PP) retained its absolute majority in elections held amid internal conflicts. One of the new government’s main challenges will be the situation in the Tigray region, where clashes continue between the Ethiopian army and the Tigre Popular Liberation Front (TPLF).
