On Thursday, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called for the immediate removal of a statue of U.S. President Donald Trump recently installed at the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, France.

Fico described the sculpture as an “offensive” representation and considered its display an “insult” to the U.S. president and a sign of the political and institutional “decline” of the European Union (EU).

The Slovak leader argued that, in an international context that requires dialogue and mutual respect, displaying a satirical work against a “strategic partner” sends the “wrong message” and reflects a lack of understanding of the current political situation.

He also criticized the European Parliament for what he described as an “inability” to distinguish between freedom of expression and actions that, in his view, are offensive or inappropriate within an official EU institution.

The work is titled “Orange Plague” and was created by Danish artist Jens Galschiot. The sculpture was placed in one of the busiest areas of the European Parliament and features a satirical depiction of Trump perched on the shoulders of a smaller man.

The piece includes an inscription that reflects on power relations and the interdependence between political actors. According to its creator, the work symbolizes the relationship between major powers and smaller actors on the contemporary international stage.

Galschiot explained that the lower figure could be interpreted as a representation of the EU, while the sculpture as a whole seeks to generate debate about global power dynamics.
