Colombian presidential candidates are intensifying their final campaign efforts across the nation, with Historic Pact’s candidate Iván Cepeda leading polls and scheduled to close his campaign on Friday in Bogotá’s Plaza Bolívar.
The candidates for the Colombian presidency are developing the final stretch of their campaigns across various municipalities of the South American nation, as part of the electoral race that will culminate in a first round on May 31.
One of the most prominent tours is that of the candidate for the Historic Pact, Iván Cepeda, who currently leads the polls. His campaign will conclude this Friday alongside his presidential running mate, Aida Quilcué.
“Today we demonstrate that when the people unite, nothing stops them“, Cepeda declared in a powerful message aimed at consolidating popular support and mobilizing their base for the upcoming vote.
Just days prior, on May 19, Cepeda presented himself in the city of Popayán, where he hosted a massive event that drew over 20,000 people. This significant gathering saw participation from communities not only from Popayán itself but also from various municipalities across the Cauca department.
Text reads: “The final stretch of our presidential campaign reaches a decisive point. Our candidate, @IvanCepedaCast, is addressed to all of Colombia with announcements of national importance.”
The overwhelming turnout in Popayán underscores the Historic Pact’s growing appeal and organizational capacity, demonstrating their ability to galvanize broad segments of the Colombian population, particularly in regions that have historically advocated for social change and progressive policies. Such large-scale rallies are critical indicators of popular momentum as the election date draws near.
Text reads: “Statement. Iván Cepeda presents the 7 programs for the social welfare of Colombians: The proposal aims to strengthen and expand the programs Colombia Mayor, Youth Income, Citizen Income, as well as create the Income for people with disabilities, Income for leaders and social leaders, Direct purchase of food to the peasantry and school supplies kit for low-income families. In addition, a plan for social programs through taxes will be agreed with entrepreneurs.”
In a contrasting move, other political parties are also concluding their campaign activities. The Christian MIRA Party and the Conservative Party have officially aligned with the pro-Uribe candidate, Paloma Valencia, who is scheduled to hold her campaign closing event on May 24. This alliance seeks to consolidate the right-wing vote and present a unified front against the Historic Pact’s surging popularity.
Meanwhile, in Río Negro, located within the department of Antioquia, the home region of former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez, the far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, representing the Homeland Defenders Movement ((“Defensores de la Patria”, in Spanish), continued his electoral campaign activities this Thursday. These diverse campaign strategies reflect the multifaceted political landscape of Colombia, with each bloc vying for dominance in the crucial final days.
Crucially, Iván Cepeda recently denounced that former president Uribe and his followers have reportedly unleashed a violent campaign in Antioquia against the Historic Pact, its leaders and his own candidacy.
“This fanatical aggression is Uribe’s response to the political and electoral force that our project is demonstrating in the department. It is also a desperate response from Uribismo to the advancements in justice and truth that have been achieved by mothers and victims”, Cepeda stressed, specifically referencing the ongoing investigations into disappearances in Colombia.
Text reads: “The trend is irreversible! Invamer’s latest poll confirms that the country has already chosen the path of dignity: @IvanCepedaCast leads with 44.6%. See you tomorrow in the Bolívar’s Square to consolidate this victory!”
The Historic Pact, through its official account on X, published a statement indicating that “the far-right model has failed.”
“While they dedicated themselves to the greedy hoarding of land, our Government is returning it to the peasantry. We are going to deepen the change; our commitment is with the Colombian people, with social justice, and with eradicating poverty from its roots”, they declared.
The upcoming election is thus positioned not just as a contest between individual candidates but as a fundamental struggle between competing socio-economic models and visions for Colombia’s future, particularly concerning social justice and the persistent issue of poverty.
