Lawyer Rosa Catrileo, the only independent candidate for the Chilean Senate for the Araucanía Region, affirmed that the government’s proposals regarding the historical territorial demands of the Mapuche people do not respond to the interests of these communities.

The government’s objective is to commodify the aspiration for territorial restitution, affirmed Catrileo, who called for a new political agreement that guarantees effective participatory processes, with results that translate into concrete solutions.

“The communities have been clear: they rejected this consultation because the proposed new land system does not align with their demands. What is needed is to build a path to a solution ”with” the Mapuche communities as political actors, and not ”for” the communities,” she stated.

The senator toured communities such as Toltén, Villarrica, Cunco, Angol, Lumaco, Traiguén, Padre Las Casas, Cholchol, Imperial, Curacautín, and Freire, among others, where she spoke directly with the communities, explaining the scope and content of the proposal.

The government must give a clear signal that it is moving forward to solve the problem of land loss by the Mapuche and should increase the land and water fund to immediately resolve the purchase of properties ready for transfer, she emphasized.

The lawyer added that the communities “need a different political approach, one that is built by listening to the voices of traditional leaders and authorities, with the effective participation of all.” In that sense, “dialogue is essential,” she emphasized. Catrileo emphasized that her political independence constitutes a guarantee for the citizens. “I do not represent parties or foreign interests. I represent the voice of the people who want real solutions and not more empty promises,” she concluded.
