Three major Belgian unions called a coordinated national strike on Monday to protest government budget cuts. The work stoppages, primarily affecting rail and air services, have forced the cancellation of numerous flights at major airports.
The protest is a direct response to the austerity measures proposed by the government, including the unpopular initiative to raise the legal retirement age. Transport unions are standing firm in their fight against the budget cuts, using the shutdown of key sectors to pressure the government to reconsider its economic policies.

The most significant impact will be felt on Wednesday, November 26, especially at the country’s main air hub. Brussels Airport, in Zaventem, the busiest in Belgium, will experience massive disruptions due to the strikes by ground staff and security personnel.
To ensure the safety of staff and passengers, airport management has taken drastic measures. The airport operator officially announced on its website: “We have decided, in consultation with the airlines, not to operate any departing flights on November 26.” This complete cancellation of passenger departures carries the possibility of cancellations for some scheduled arrivals.
The strike action is not limited to the airspace, as the coordinated national strike is also affecting rail services. Travelers with connecting flights or who rely on transport within the capital and the country were advised to allow extra time due to the high probability of disruption to public transport and national trains.
Airlines have been tasked with contacting affected passengers directly in the coming days to inform them of their options. This situation brings to mind the strikes last October, which caused serious delays and cancellations, affecting tens of thousands of people throughout Belgium.
