China expects “efforts” from the United States to achieve a “positive outcome based on equality, respect, and mutual benefit,” just one day before the current trade truce between the two powers is set to expire, official sources reported on Monday.

“We hope that the U.S. will work with China to uphold the important consensus reached between the two heads of state, make use of the established economic and trade consultation mechanism, and strive to achieve a positive outcome based on equality, respect, and mutual benefit,” said the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

In May, both sides agreed in Geneva to the current truce, which expires this Tuesday. The agreement established a 115-percentage-point reduction in the tariffs that had been imposed since early April, effectively resulting in a de facto trade embargo between the world’s two largest economic powers. The two parties held their most recent talks at the end of July in Stockholm, where they expressed their willingness to continue prioritizing dialogue over escalation.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer later stated in an interview with CBS that both parties are “working” to extend the truce, while Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that another pause “of about 90 days” is possible.

The Asian country defends its right to maintain normal relations with its other trading partners and rejects pressure from Trump, who on Friday will hold a historic meeting with Putin in Alaska that could determine the puzzle of disputes among major powers.
