More than 60 works by Latin American creators make up the collective exhibition “Artists for Cuba”, a show of solidarity with the island inaugurated today in the Ecuadorian capital.
During the opening, the plastic artist Pilar Bustos, one of the promoters of the initiative, highlighted how the exhibition, with pieces by more than 40 painters, constitutes a tribute from the middle of the world to the Day of Cuban Culture.

The exhibition includes oil paintings, silkscreen prints, engravings, drawings and other techniques, and will be open at the Casa Egüez Cultural Center, in downtown Quito, until next Saturday, October 25, the day on which an auction of all the donated works will take place.

Yumac Ortiz, also an artist and leader of the Coordinator for Peace, Sovereignty, Integration and Non-Interference (CPAZ), explained that the funds raised will be used to purchase medical supplies for the Cuban people in the face of the U.S. blockade against the Caribbean nation.
“This initiative was born from the great campaign that is being carried out internationally for the love of Cuba, in solidarity with that people who have been so reciprocal, so supportive of the peoples of the world,” Ortiz said.
Meanwhile, the Cuban ambassador to Ecuador, Basilio Gutiérrez, thanked the initiative on behalf of his country and highlighted the art committed to justice and solidarity that now has the noble purpose of sending medicines
“Culture will tell us about the barbarity they want to impose on us,” the diplomat said.
Gutierrez recalled how Cuba has been in solidarity with other nations of the world and now needs help in the face of the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade.

Among the works on display and that will be auctioned are some by Cuban creators residing in Ecuador, such as Miguel RÃos and Luis Alberto Ruiz Saavedra, as well as canvases by artists from the Antillean nation belonging to the collection of the GuayasamÃn Foundation, an entity that now offers them for the solidarity cause.
They are joined by painters from Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela and Chile.
The inauguration of “Artists for Cuba” was accompanied by the presentation of Cuban singer Aurora Feliú and other Latin American musicians who performed songs alluding to the brotherhood between peoples.
The public will be able to tour the exhibition throughout the week and participate in the final auction, conceived not only as a cultural act, but as a gesture of brotherhood towards Cuba, considered a symbol of Latin American resistance and dignity Chile.
