Seville, May 17, 2026 — More than 6.8 million Andalusians are voting today in the Andalusian elections to elect 109 deputies to the regional parliament for the XIII Legislature. Polling stations across the eight provinces opened at 09:00 local time and will close at 20:00, with provisions to allow waiting voters to cast their ballots.

Nearly 3,800 polling stations opened their doors this morning. This represents an increase of 2.5% in registered voters compared to the 2022 elections, adding more than 171,000 new participants to the electoral roll.

The Andalusian elections are considered highly significant, not only for the most populous region in Spain but also as a barometer for national political trends ahead of future general elections.

Security is tight, with over 14,500 officers from the National Police and Civil Guard deployed across the region to ensure a smooth and orderly voting process.

The Andalusian elections come at a politically charged moment. Incumbent President Juanma Moreno of the center-right People’s Party (PP) is seeking re-election and appears favored in pre-election polls to maintain or strengthen his position. The opposition Socialist Party (PSOE), led by María Jesús Montero, aims to improve its standing after recent national setbacks.

Other parties, including Vox on the right and left-wing coalitions such as Por Andalucía, are also competing for seats. Analysts suggest the results could influence the balance of power and strategies of major parties at the national level.

Voter turnout will be closely watched throughout the day, with early indications suggesting participation levels comparable to or slightly higher than previous elections.

The Andalusian elections hold substantial weight beyond regional boundaries. As Spain’s largest autonomous community by population, the outcome often signals broader shifts in voter sentiment across the country.

Key campaign issues included economic development, employment, public services, agriculture, tourism, and water management — all critical concerns for Andalusia’s diverse population.

The Andalusian elections occur within a complex national and European political environment. Spain continues to navigate internal territorial dynamics between the central government and autonomous communities while facing broader challenges including economic recovery, energy transition, and migration management in the Mediterranean.

As a key southern European region, Andalusia’s political direction influences Spain’s stance on EU policies, particularly regarding agriculture, cohesion funds, and relations with North Africa. A strong performance by the center-right could reinforce conservative voices in national debates, while a fragmented result might encourage coalition-building and more moderate approaches.

On a wider scale, these elections reflect ongoing trends in European regional politics, where local concerns increasingly intersect with national and supranational issues. The vote provides insight into voter priorities regarding social welfare, economic opportunity, and governance models at a time when many European nations face similar questions about populism, centrism, and progressive alternatives.

The peaceful and democratic conduct of the Andalusian elections also reaffirms the strength of Spain’s decentralized system and its commitment to regional autonomy within the framework of national unity.
