Venezuela’s Acting President, Delcy Rodríguez, met Wednesday with Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), signing a joint declaration aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation.

The meeting took place at the headquarters of Venezuela’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, where the two leaders held what both governments described as a cordial working session marking the start of a new stage in bilateral relations.

During the encounter, both government reaffirmed the historic bonds of friendship and cooperation between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago, while reiterating their commitment to consolidating a bilateral agenda grounded in mutual respect, sovereignty, good neighborliness, dialogue and cooperation.

Both sides agreed on a working agenda focused on strengthening trade and mutual benefit in areas including energy, security, air connectivity, tourism, disaster risk management, environmental protection, agriculture and culture, according to the joint declaration.

The relationship between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago is shaped by deep geopolitical, border and, above all, energy interdependence. Both nations share key strategic interests, including the joint development and exploitation of natural gas deposits, as well as cooperation on maritime security and the management of migration flows across the Caribbean.

Shared Interests, Growing Dialogue

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez reiterated the Venezuelan people’s gratitude to the government and people of Trinidad and Tobago for the solidarity shown following the twin earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24. To maintain a direct high-level consultation mechanism, both leaders agreed to carry out official visits to Caracas and Port of Spain, with the Venezuelan side noting that the Trinidadian Prime Minister was effectively considered a “persona grata” in Venezuela.

The two governments ratified their determination to continue building a relationship of friendship, good neighborliness, trust and cooperation, aimed at generating concrete opportunities for development and welfare for both peoples, while contributing to peace, stability and prosperity throughout the Caribbean.

Both nations share key strategic interests, including the joint development and exploitation of natural gas deposits, as well as cooperation on maritime security and the management of migration flows across the Caribbean region. In recent months, Persad-Bissessar has repeatedly reaffirmed her intention to build bridges with the Venezuelan government in pursuit of agreements of mutual benefit, expressing her explicit willingness to maintain direct dialogue with Caracas.

This meeting marks the beginning of a new stage in bilateral relations between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago.”

The Venezuelan delegation included Vice President for the Economy Calixto Ortega, Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia, Hydrocarbons Minister Paula Henao, First Vice Foreign Minister Oliver Blanco, Deputy Foreign Minister for the Caribbean Carlos Pérez, and Venezuela’s Permanent Representative to the U.N., Ambassador Coromoto Godoy.

Representing Trinidad and Tobago were Foreign Minister and Minister of CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Nicholas Morris, Permanent Secretary and Head of the Public Service Natasha Barrow, Permanent Secretary and Head of the Foreign Service Randall Karim, and Trinidad and Tobago’s Permanent Representative to the U.N., Neil Tadesh Parsan.

The meeting was one of several high-level engagements held by Rodríguez during her working visit to New York, as part of a broader effort to advance multilateral cooperation channels grounded in dialogue and mutual respect. Her agenda during the visit also included meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump, Inter-American Development Bank President Ilan Goldfajn, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
