The Venezuelan government categorically rejected on Wednesday Guyana’s plan to conduct offshore seismic surveys in waters which, it argues, Guyana has no right to exploit, calling the nation’s designation of an exclusive economic zone there ‘unilateral.’
According to the official statement, this constitutes an open contravention of fundamental principles of international law. Venezuela is demanding that the Government of Guyana refrain from performing these unilateral acts, which it warns could harm the customary law principles that govern the international relations of coastal states.

Caracas specifically pointed to principles that prohibit states from adopting measures that could create or aggravate differences, steering away from the framework of international law and the compliance of existing agreements and guiding principles.
In its firm response, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterated that it does not recognize, and will not recognize, any concession, license, or activity related to the exploration or exploitation of natural resources in undelimited maritime areas that have been unilaterally granted by Guyana.
Furthermore, it stated that it rejects any rights that third parties might attempt to derive from such alleged illegal acts.
