A proposal by Democrats to expedite a potential rule to separately fund security at airports in the United States, currently in a precarious situation, failed this Saturday in the Senate.

The measure, which sought to link funding for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to the Republican bill requiring voter identification to participate in federal elections, resulted in 41 votes in favor and 49 against, with 10 senators absent from the vote, four Republicans and six Democrats.
Due to this result, the attempt to achieve a fast track to fund the TSA is not progressing in the chamber.
This leaves the situation in the country’s airports, affected by the partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, blocked and up in the air.
Just yesterday, the Senate rejected, for the fifth time since February, funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which has been shut down for five weeks and on which the TSA and immigration agencies also depend.
The suspension of payroll for TSA workers has led many to request leave or resign, causing very long lines at major U.S. airports such as Atlanta, New York’s JFK, and New Orleans.
The Democrats’ refusal to fund the Department of Homeland Security originated after two Minneapolis citizens died in January from shootings by federal agents, within the framework of the massive immigration raids activated by the Donald Trump government in the state of Minnesota.
Democrats are now demanding modifications to operations to detain migrants in order to approve budgets for this portfolio, such as requiring agents to wear uncovered faces or body cameras and not be able to raid properties without a court order.
Donald Trump himself threatened today to entrust security controls at the country’s airports to agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) starting Monday if Democrats do not approve TSA funding.
