A recent visit by U.S. envoy Tom Barak to Beirut has stirred controversy after remarks and behavior deemed disrespectful by Lebanese journalists and political observers.

The incident occurred during a press conference at the Presidential Palace, where Barak reportedly dismissed reporters’ questions and described their conduct as “animalistic” and “chaotic.”

Barak’s comments came as journalists sought clarity on Lebanon’s precarious position amid fears of war with Israel or internal conflict. His tone and language were widely criticized as condescending, with comparisons drawn to the Trump-era diplomatic style of public rebuke and disregard for local sensitivities.

Lebanese media figures and activists reacted strongly. Journalist Samar Abu Khalil described the moment as “a humiliation of our dignity,” while political commentator Bilal Rayan called it “a continuation of American arrogance in the region.”

Adding to the controversy, U.S. envoy Morgan Ortagus was seen laughing during the exchange, and later appeared in public with a deliberately styled haircut that some interpreted as a provocative gesture.

Lebanese observers viewed this as symbolic of a colonial mindset, especially given the timing—amid U.S. pressure on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah.

In a televised speech, Hezbollah Deputy Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem condemned the government’s decision to pursue disarmament under what he called “American-Israeli dictates.” He reaffirmed the group’s refusal to relinquish its weapons, calling them “our soul, our land, our dignity, and our children’s future.”

The party, along with its ally Amal, canceled a planned protest to avoid escalation, but emphasized the need for “deep and constructive dialogue” on Lebanon’s future.
