Conflicting Signals and Delayed Deadlines Mark His Approach Since Start of War.

Since the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran began Feb. 28, President Donald Trump has been sending contradictory signals regarding the real objectives of the military attacks on the Persian nation.

The absence of a coherent strategy is reflected in his successive declarations of victory, which Trump alternates with “final” ultimatums for surrender and threats to prolong the war.

The following is a timeline of the ultimatums the U.S. president has given Iran related to reopening the Strait of Hormuz:

March 21. Trump threatens to attack Iran’s power plants if the Islamic Republic does not reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, giving it 48 hours.

“If Iran does not fully open, without threats, the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours from this very moment, the United States will attack and destroy its power plants, starting with the largest!” the president wrote on Truth Social.

That same day, Iran reported a U.S.-Israeli attack on the Natanz nuclear facility, and Washington temporarily authorized the sale of Iranian oil stranded at sea.

March 23. Trump postpones the ultimatum and says Iran wants to reach an agreement that could come within the next five days. Iranian media deny that there are negotiations between Iran and Washington and assert that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed.

March 24. The U.S. president says Iran has given his country “a very big gift” related to the Strait of Hormuz, although he provides no further details. He also signals a forthcoming agreement in talks with Iran, citing “a change in the regime.” The Iranian government denies any contact.

March 26. Trump extends the deadline until April 6 for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and again threatens to destroy its power plants if it does not.

The U.S. president announces that, “at the request of the Iranian government,” he has decided to extend the deadline by 10 more days, setting it to expire Monday, April 6, at 8 p.m. in Washington (0000 GMT Tuesday, April 7).

March 27. Trump refers to the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait.”

April 5. Trump suggests he is delaying the ultimatum by one day, until 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, in Washington (0000 GMT Wednesday), for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

“Tuesday, at 20:00 Eastern Time!” he wrote on Truth Social. “Open the damn strait, you crazy bastards, or you will live in hell. You’ll see!” he added.
