Candidate Roberto Sánchez holds a narrow lead over right-wing rival Keiko Fujimori today with 97.9% of the electoral acts counted by the Peru’s National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE, in Spanish).

Official statistics from the national electoral body show that the current margin between the two political leaders stands at approximately 10,000 votes. This tiny difference means that both contenders still have statistical possibilities of winning the presidency.

The future leader of the South American nation will assume office for a five-year period spanning 2026-2031. This democratic transition follows a highly volatile period marked by political instability in Peru, which produced eight presidents in only ten years.

Determining the definitive winner of this presidential race requires processing all remaining electoral documents. The National Office of Electoral Processes reported that technicians must still verify 120 regular acts, 100 observed acts and 720 records sent by Peruvian citizens living abroad.

Political observers in Peru estimate that the foreign vote will heavily favor Keiko Fujimori. With 67.4% of the international acts processed, the far right-wing candidate secured 130,000 votes, while the progressive candidate received 80,000.

The total volume of votes under scrutiny in the observed acts represents between 250,000 and 320,000 potential ballots. These controversial records will be evaluated through detailed legal analysis by the National Election Jury (JNE, in Spanish) to determine their ultimate validity.

Special electoral courts are already reviewing these challenged documents in different regions. Authorities decided that a small group of 37 to 40 electoral acts must go through a physical recount to ensure total transparency.

Due to the long administrative processes required to solve these disputes, the complete count will take several weeks. The Electoral authorities announced that the official proclamation of the winning candidate will take place on July 15.

Consequently, the highest electoral court issued a public appeal for peace to all citizens and political organizations. The institution requested that all political forces wait responsibly for the conclusion of the legal phases of the election.

The progressive candidate, Roberto Sánchez, strongly criticized the private polling company Ipsos, accusing the firm of trying to manipulate the election results, demanding demanded total respect for the democratic decision expressed by the Peruvian electorate.

The presidential election registered an active participation rate of 69.7% among registered voters. This high turnout reflects the deep commitment of the Peruvian people to decide the future direction of their nation after years of political crises.
