The world today is going through many contradictions; there are pressures in one direction that lead us to more and more conflicts, said the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, in an exclusive interview with TeleSur, at the United Nations, where the 80th session of the General Assembly of that international organization is taking place this week.

The head of government also commented on disruptions in trade with tariffs that create great uncertainty and also spoke of alliances that are broken and further complicate the international scenario.

On the other hand, he added, many remain hopeful of achieving a better world; so there are two contrasting positions in the world, although today uncertainty prevails in the face of so many catastrophic events worldwide.

Challenges of all kinds overwhelm us: issues related to climate change, the advance of artificial intelligence, the desire for sustainable development in a context of uneven development and in the middle of all this is the genocide that is taking place before our eyes in Gaza and the West Bank, the diplomat said.

Later, he said, the U.S. blockade of Cuba and the hardening of the policies of economic asphyxiation against that nation, as well as the naval deployment ordered by President Donald Trump in the waters of the Caribbean Sea to destabilize Venezuela, worry us today because they violate the principle of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace. Such a show of force, he said, is rejected by Caribbean countries and institutions such as CELAC.

We have to combat scourges that affect our region such as the trafficking of cocaine, fentanyl and others, but we do not need that type of excessive militarization, the prime minister said. In this context, associations such as BRICS and CARICOM must be very clear about their position and strengthen their influence on the world stage, the head of government said.
