“Venezuela commemorates the 80th anniversary of the victory of the heroic Chinese people against Japanese aggression. We honor the memory of millions of men and women who, under the leadership of Mao Zedong, ‘the Great Helmsman,’ rose up in a struggle of dignity that was one of humanity’s greatest victories.
I send a Bolivarian greeting to my brother President Xi Jinping and to the Chinese people. I have great admiration for their millenary culture, their capacity for work and, above all, for the humility of their political leadership which, despite being a power, is able to engage on terms of equality and respect with all governments and peoples of the world.
The victory 80 years ago turned the course of history, achieving Mao Zedong’s dream: the new China. Its triumph shows us that with the unity of the people, any imperial force that seeks to subjugate our homeland can be defeated. Together, Venezuela and China walk toward building a multipolar world of peace and justice, where the sovereignty of peoples is the most sacred value,” President Maduro stated.
Meanwhile, China showcased its military power in a parade in Beijing, where Xi was joined by heads of state from around the world, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The leaders’ arrival at Tiananmen Square was marked by 80 cannon salutes symbolizing each year since the end of World War II, followed by the raising of the flag of the People’s Republic and a solemn performance of the national anthem.
“The Chinese people made a great contribution to saving human civilization and defending world peace. Today, humanity once again faces choices: peace or war, dialogue or confrontation, mutually beneficial cooperation or zero-sum games. Only when countries treat each other as equals and live in harmony can common security be safeguarded, the causes of war eliminated and the tragedies of history prevented from being repeated,” Xi declared.
