The Government of Paraguay announced this Saturday the shipment of 50 tons of humanitarian aid to Colombia to help alleviate the emergency caused by Monday’s 7.4 magnitude earthquake, which so far has left 294 dead and some 115,461 people affected.

The Paraguayan president, Santiago Peña, made the announcement after reviewing the material in one of the hangars of the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in the city of Luque, which serves the capital Asunción.

“All our appreciation, all our support to the Colombian people, Paraguay is a grateful country and Colombia, historically, has always been a brotherly people with Paraguay,” said the president in a video he shared on his social networks.

“Today we want to say that we are with you,” added Peña, who this same day completes 3 years as president of Paraguay.

The spokesperson for the Paraguayan Presidency reported that the aid is made up of “medicines, medical supplies and non-perishable food” that are destined for the city of Medellín, where there is a network of collection centers for donations.

Similarly, the spokesperson recalled that Colombia and Paraguay share “a history of deep friendship,” in allusion to the gestures of solidarity of Colombian institutions after the end of the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870) in which, according to some historians, 60% of the Paraguayan population perished.
