The Spain’s technical director for the national football team, Luis de la Fuente, officially unveiled this Monday the squad selected for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The announcement defines the roster that will represent the country in the prestigious tournament, notably marked by an unprecedented fact: the complete absence of any Real Madrid footballers, a first in the history of World Cup call-ups for the Iberian national side, reflecting a significant strategic shift.
Historically, the team from the Spanish capital has always contributed key players to the national team in such major tournaments, symbolizing the strength and depth of Spanish football.

On this occasion, however, the composition of the squad signals a clear change in trend, driven by the coach’s recent strategic decisions and team philosophy.
In sharp contrast to the lack of Real Madrid players, FC Barcelona has solidified its position as the foundational core of the national team, with eight of its footballers making the final selection. De la Fuente has chosen to maintain the structure and playing philosophy that have yielded recent positive results, including the European Championship title.

The Spanish squad will be spearheaded by names already well-established in the European elite, players who consistently dictate the pace and rhythm of the team. Among the selected figures, Rodri Hernández, Pedri, Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal stand out. These players, representing a blend of experienced talent and promising youth, are expected to be pivotal in Spain’s pursuit of international glory, embodying the dynamic and technical approach favored by the coaching staff and resonating with the broader footballing world.
With this arsenal of talent and under the distinguished banner of being the current European champions, the Spanish squad will travel to the World Cup tournament bearing the weighty label of a favorite. The team approaches the competition with a singular and clear objective: to bring home a second World Cup star and to replicate the glorious title achieved in 2010.
The finalized list notably includes the participation of Víctor Muñoz, who marks an important precedent by becoming the first player from Osasuna Club Atletic ever to be selected to compete in a World Cup with the senior national team. This inclusion celebrates individual achievement and broadens the representation of smaller clubs within the national setup, demonstrating that talent from various tiers of the Spanish league can rise to the highest international stage, inspiring players across the country and further enriching the national team’s diverse talent pool.

The Spanish delegation is set to commence its concentration period in the coming days, a crucial phase for team cohesion and final preparations. As part of their warm-up schedule before their journey to North America, the team will face Iraq on June 4 and Peru on June 8 in two pre-tournament friendly matches.
The aspiration for a second World Cup title resonates globally, particularly among countries striving to establish their presence and prowess on the world stage through sports, using athletic achievement as a symbol of national capability and determination.
