A total of 134,797 Brazilians registered in Portugal are called to vote this Sunday in the first round of their country’s presidential election, a record figure that exceeds by 66.63% that of 2022 and constitutes the second largest electoral census in Brazil abroad, only behind the US.
7 Powerful Steps on Women’s Rights in Brazil Under Lula’s Agenda: More Than 130.000 Brazilians Able to Vote in Portugal TomorrowThe final data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), calculated from the official polling station file, distributes the electorate among Lisbon, with 78,833 registered voters; Porto, with 47,676; and Faro, with 8,288.
Lisbon is also the city with the most Brazilian voters outside of Brazil, while Porto ranks third, after Boston.
Brazilians with electoral domicile abroad can only vote for president and vice-president. The TSE has validated twelve candidacies for the first round on October 4; if none exceeds half of the valid votes, the second round will be held on the 25th.
The latest Portuguese administrative record counts 493,622 residents of Brazilian nationality as of December 31, 2025, equivalent to 31.1% of foreigners registered by the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA). Brazil thus continues, by far, to be the main foreign nationality in Portugal.
There is another official figure, but of a different nature: the latest country-by-country estimate published by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with a base year of 2023, calculated that some 513,000 Brazilians lived in Portugal: 320,000 in the consular jurisdiction of Lisbon, 160,000 in Porto, and 33,000 in Faro. Itamaraty warns that this is an estimate prepared with information from its consular posts, not an administrative register.
The 134,797 registered voters represent about 27.3% of the Brazilian population counted by AIMA, but this proportion does not measure how many adult residents have political rights: to vote in Portugal, it was necessary to have a regular electoral registration and to have transferred or requested electoral domicile abroad before the closing of the census on May 6.
The census located in Portugal has increased by 53,901 people since the 2022 presidential elections, when there were 80,896 registered voters.
In the first round of 2022, 46% of Brazilians eligible to vote in Portugal voted. Lula da Silva then obtained 21,839 votes, 60.39% of the valid votes; Jair Bolsonaro, 11,218, 31.02%. In the second round, 80,709 voters were eligible, and turnout was 46.46%.
Lula won in Portugal with 23,256 votes, exactly 64% of the valid votes, compared to 13,081 for Bolsonaro, 36%.
