Earlier, the Education Secretary announced that the school year would end on June 5, one month earlier than scheduled. It also stated that the next school year would begin on Aug. 31. The measure would apply to public and private elementary, middle, and high schools.

The proposal to end the current school year early emerged after a meeting attended by education secretaries from at least 10 states and representatives of the National Union of Education Workers.

Those officials requested moving up the vacations because of the World Cup, but Sheinbaum clarified and qualified the announcement, noting that there is still no fully defined school calendar.

On June 11, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Mexico, United States and Canada, will begin with a match in Mexico City.

One of the venues where World Cup matches will be played is “Azteca,” a 60-year-old sports stadium that has hosted three World Cup opening matches.

Azteca witnessed Pele lift the Jules Rimet Trophy at the 1970 World Cup and Diego Maradona raise the FIFA trophy in 1986. Three first-round matches, one Round of 32 match and one Round of 16 match will be played at the iconic Mexican stadium.
