Mexico Confirms 37 Dead, 117 Municipalities Affected After Heavy Rains

The Government of Mexico confirmed this Saturday that, to date, 37 people have been reported dead due to the heavy rains, as well as severe damage in 117 municipalities across the country.

The National Coordination of Civil Protection (CNPC) stated in a press release that the 37 deaths were reported by the governments of the central states of Hidalgo (22), Puebla (9), Querétaro (1), and the eastern state of Veracruz (5).

“Local and federal authorities maintain constant communication with their families to provide them with the required support,” the note stated.

The CNPC added that emergency efforts are focused on 117 municipalities in five states, where there has been “major damage”: Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí (center).

In Veracruz, the authority specified, 55 municipalities are affected, with at least 16,000 homes damaged, 42 communities with limited access, 25 damaged communication routes, and 51 landslides.

In Hidalgo, the CNPC reported 13 affected municipalities, with around 1,200 homes, 308 schools, and 59 health centers affected, in addition to 150 communities without access, six overflowing streams, 71 damaged communication routes, and 190 landslides.

In Puebla, there is a preliminary record of 37 affected municipalities, at least 16,000 homes, one hospital, and three communication routes with damage, in addition to 83 landslides and hillside slides in different regions of the state.

In Querétaro, there is a report of seven affected municipalities, with 147 homes damaged, five communities without temporary access, five affected communication routes, and 16 hillside slides.

And in San Luis Potosí, there are five municipalities with damage, at least 1,000 homes affected, 25 landslides, four overflowing streams or with active runoff, and one landslide “of great magnitude,” according to the CNPC.

Regarding the impact on electrical power, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported 130,819 affected users in Veracruz, with 20% progress in restoring service.

Meanwhile, in Querétaro, there are 4,512 affected users with 97% progress in restoring electricity; in Puebla, 26,442 affected users with 14% progress; and in Hidalgo, 65,443 affected users with 49% progress.

The CNPC assured that it is actively working in the aforementioned states in coordination with state and municipal governments, together with the Secretariats of Defense, Navy, Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), National Guard (GN), National Water Commission (Conagua), and CFE.

For her part, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced in a message on X that at 12:30 hours (20:30 GMT) she will hold a virtual meeting with the governors of Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, and Querétaro, along with the CNPC “to evaluate progress in assisting the population affected by the heavy rains.”

Sheinbaum affirmed that “once the emergency is addressed, the censuses for supporting the population will begin” and promised that her Government will not leave anyone “unprotected.”
