Mexico City has set a new Guinness Record for the largest human wave in the world outside a stadium. Tens of thousands of people gathered on Paseo de la Reforma for this event, which served as a street celebration five days before the start of the 2026 World Cup.
US Claims ICE Will Prioritize Security Over Deportations During World Cup: Mexico Breaks World’s Largest Human Wave Record Five Days Before the World CupThe “World Wave” began around 10:30 AM, local time, after a three-hour call from authorities.
“We achieved the largest wave in the world,” said the Secretary of Tourism of the North American capital, Alejandra Frausto.
Guinness Record judges were present at the event to verify the number of attendees, who will later specify the number of participants.
The previous record was held by the Portuguese city of Lisbon, which in 2007 gathered more than 8,000 people in a public park, but Mexico City widely surpassed it this day.
In the festive atmosphere, the predominant color was the green of the Mexican national team’s kit, which will debut on June 11 in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup against South Africa.
The previous largest wave in the world was 157,000 people, but this was recorded inside a stadium, and the Mexican movement was in the streets.
In this year’s World Cup, held in Mexico, Canada, and the United States, 48 national teams from five continents will compete, making it the tournament with the most national teams in its history.
In the case of the North American country, where the opening match and twelve other matches will be held, the venues are Mexico City, Guadalajara (west), and Monterrey (north).
