The attack occurred as Omar, a US lawmaker of Somali origin, was delivering remarks critical of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minneapolis. According to video footage published by Fox News, the man, seated among the audience in front of the stage, stood up and discharged a liquid from a syringe toward Omar’s torso. He then moved toward her while pointing before a security officer intervened and restrained him.
Local media outlets, citing comments from Omar’s team, reported that the substance emitted a “strong smell” and may have been vinegar.
Translation: During a rally in #Minneapolis, an individual attacked Democratic legislator Ilhan Omar by spraying her with a liquid, and was apprehended by a member of the security team shortly after.
Omar’s office later stated on X that the congresswoman was “fine” and that the “agitator” was in authorities’ custody. Minneapolis police told NBC that the suspect was booked into the Hennepin County jail on suspicion of third-degree assault.
At the moment of the attack, Omar was calling for the abolition of ICE and for the “resignation or removal” of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Similar demands have been voiced by other Democrats following the deaths of two demonstrators who were shot by federal agents in January.
As security officers subdued the attacker, several people in the crowd expressed concern. Omar gestured that she intended to continue and was heard saying, “We’re going to keep going. These damn idiots are not going to get away with it.” Shortly afterward, she told the audience from the podium, “This is the reality that people like this ugly man don’t understand: Minnesota is strong and we will stand up to anything they throw at us.”
Omar, a Muslim congresswoman of Somali origin, has been a frequent target of attacks by former President Donald Trump. On Monday, Trump accused her of leaving Somalia “with nothing” and now having, according to him, “a net worth of more than $44 million.”
