U.S. envoy Jared Kushner met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem to try to keep the fragile ceasefire in Gaza from falling apart. The visit comes as Tel Aviv’s regime faces growing international pressure over its two-year genocidal campaign on Gaza, which has killed more than 69,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to local health officials.

The discussions focused on the U.S. plan to reshape Gaza after the war. The proposal calls for disarming the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, deploying foreign security forces, and installing a new administration that excludes the movement entirely. Hamas has rejected disarmament.

Netanyahu made clear Israel’s stance has not changed, telling parliament that Gaza will be “demilitarized, either the easy way or the hard way,” signaling Israel could resume large-scale attacks if its demands are not met.

One key dispute involves around 200 Hamas fighters trapped in tunnels under Rafah. Hamas wants them to be allowed safe passage to another area of Gaza. The Zionist entity has refused, and US officials say how this issue is resolved could determine whether the ceasefire survives.

Beyond that, major issues remain unresolved: who will govern Gaza, who will provide security, and whether reconstruction will move forward.

A proposed international security force would likely require approval from the United Nations. However, a few nations have expressed willingness to participate without one, including Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye.
