On Sunday, the Israeli military confirmed it carried out an attack on energy facilities in Sana’a, stating the operation was in response to “ongoing assaults by the Houthi terrorist regime against the State of Israel and its citizens, including the launch of surface-to-surface missiles and drones.”

While Israel did not disclose further details, local Yemeni media reported that a power plant south of Sana’a was struck overnight, triggering a fire and disabling several generators.

Houthi rebels, allied with Iran, frequently target Israel with ballistic missiles and drones, though most are intercepted before reaching their targets. Israel, in turn, has repeatedly struck Sana’a and other Houthi-controlled areas.

The exchanges escalated following Israel’s offensive against Hamas in Gaza, initiated after attacks by the Islamist group on October 7, 2023, and have persisted despite a ceasefire between the Houthis and the United States, Israel’s main ally, which came into effect in May 2025.

Mohamed Miftah, Vice Prime Minister of the Houthi-led Yemeni government, reported that repairs at the Haiz power plant have begun and the fire from the Israeli strike has been contained.

The strike highlights the ongoing cycle of retaliation between Israel and Houthi forces, illustrating the broader regional tensions tied to the conflict in Gaza.
