Iranian envoy says BRICS members have a shared responsibility to help build a fairer and more stable global energy system.

Iran has emphasized the growing importance of BRICS countries in safeguarding global energy security, arguing that the bloc is increasingly positioned to help shape a more inclusive and balanced international energy architecture amid mounting geopolitical and economic challenges.

Speaking at the panel “BRICS Development Prospects: Transformations and New Opportunities” during the 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2026), Iran’s Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, said countries of the Global South—particularly BRICS members—are playing an increasingly significant role in the global energy sector.

Jalali argued that energy should serve as a driver of development and prosperity rather than a means of political pressure. He called for deeper cooperation among BRICS countries through the expansion of port infrastructure, the development of the International North-South Transport Corridor, stronger logistics and transport networks, and enhanced connectivity across member states’ energy systems.

“These measures can contribute to increasing the security and sustainability of energy trade at the regional and global levels,” he said.

Addressing the role of BRICS within the global energy landscape, the Iranian diplomat pointed to a range of factors affecting international energy markets.

“Geopolitical tensions, disruptions in supply chains, fluctuations in global markets and rising demand in emerging economies demonstrate that energy security has become, more than ever, one of the fundamental pillars of global stability and development,” Jalali stated.

He stressed that energy security extends beyond access to resources alone.

“Energy security is not limited to access to energy resources, but is a comprehensive concept that encompasses supply security, demand security, investment security, technological security, infrastructure security and financial security,” he said.

According to Jalali, the economic and energy capacities of BRICS members also entail collective responsibilities.

“These countries have the responsibility to contribute to the formation of a fairer, more stable and inclusive system for global energy security,” he said.

The ambassador concluded by reaffirming Iran’s position on international peace and cooperation.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has not only not attacked any country, but has always advocated peace, stability and security in the world and, as a BRICS member and one of the major energy producers, will play a constructive and effective role in achieving justice and global energy security,” he said.

Iran officially joined BRICS as a full member on January 1, 2024, as part of the group’s major expansion.
