George, responsible for organizing U.S. Army ground forces, was removed after serving in the role since August 2023, according to U.S. War Department spokesperson Sean Parnell.

Gen. David Hodne, head of the Training and Transformation Command, as well as Maj. William Green, chief of the Chaplain Corps, were also dismissed.

Media outlets such as CBS and CNN previously reported that George had a strained relationship with Secretary Hegseth and other senior leaders amid disagreements over decision-making in the war on Iran.

Last week, the general visited Louisiana to observe training exercises of the 82nd Airborne Division, whose units are currently en route to the Middle East.

George and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll promoted the Army Transformation Initiative, a strategic plan aimed at modernizing ground forces.

The reform included consolidating various service commands and eliminating military equipment considered obsolete or surplus, notably phasing out AH-64D Apache helicopters to optimize operational resources.

George, a career infantry officer, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1988. Before serving as chief of staff, he commanded I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and later served as senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during President Joe Biden’s administration.
