After the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and launched an operation in the region. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder. The Green Party, to which Bahena belonged, demanded an immediate and transparent investigation.

“With profound consternation, we mourn the assassination of the mayor of Pisaflores. We express our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Pisaflores,” said Avelino Tovar, a local leader of the party-.

Hours before the attack, the mayor posted on social media about the rain emergency in the municipality, reporting damage to homes, schools, water infrastructure, and 90% of the roads in 52 communities.

The text reads, “The Green Party demands justice for the murder of Miguel Bahena. The PVEM (Poverty Reduction Party) strongly condemned the murder of the mayor of Pisaflores, Hidalgo, Miguel Bahena, and called for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation. The party expressed its solidarity with the family, friends, and residents of Pisaflores.”

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), 33,241 homicides were recorded nationwide in 2024. In most cases, the victims were men and firearms were used in seven out of 10 cases.

Firearms remain the primary means used to commit homicides in Mexico. “Eighty percent of these illegal weapons are believed to be from the United States. Obviously, it’s not the only source, but it is the largest,” noted Victor Manuel Sanchez, a researcher at the Autonomous University of Coahuila.

In October 2024, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum presented her National Security Strategy, with axes such as addressing the causes of crimes and strengthening intelligence and investigation. She highlighted official reports that showed low figures, but did not comment on the numbers released that month by the INEGI.
