Carrying over 300 tons of humanitarian supplies and several hundred activists from across Europe, the mission aims to challenge the longstanding Israeli blockade on Gaza and raise awareness of the devastating humanitarian crisis born from what activists describe as an ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing in the Palestinian territory.

Around 20 vessels, including a diverse fleet ranging from modest wooden sailboats to industrial ships and older luxury yachts, gradually left the Moll de la Fusta docks amid cheers from approximately 5,000 supporters waving Palestinian flags and carrying signs expressing solidarity with Venezuela and other causes. Onboard the convoy were 300 activists, humanitarian workers, and medical personnel united in their determination to break Gaza’s isolation.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, described by organizers as the largest civilian-led maritime solidarity mission to Gaza to date, is part of a broader effort involving around 50 boats launched from ports across Europe, including Genoa, Italy, and several Mediterranean countries such as Tunisia, Greece, and Sicily.
This coordinated international campaign seeks to send a powerful message about the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza and the refusal of its people to be forgotten amid international inaction.
In the days leading to departure, solidarity events took place across Europe, with concerts, rallies, and volunteer efforts galvanizing support and helping load the flotilla with essential goods like food, water, and medical supplies.
According to Stefano Rebora, founder of the Italian NGO Music For Peace, organizers initially planned to collect 40 tons in four days but were overwhelmed by generosity, collecting 300 tons in just five days — so much that the collections had to be temporarily halted.
Despite the evident enthusiasm and hope, flotilla organizers and participants remain acutely aware of the risks involved. They expect to face opposition from the Israeli authorities, who have previously intercepted ships in international waters through armed assaults and detentions.
“The Zionist entity will spy on us, threaten us, denigrate us, and try to obstruct the journey by any means, including armed assault and kidnapping in international waters,” activists warned solemnly, underscoring the seriousness of the mission.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels since May 2025, when Israel intensified its siege, cutting off vital supplies of food, medicine, and water. This blockade has caused widespread famine; official sources report at least 329 deaths due to starvation, including 124 children, with over half a million people at risk of dying from malnutrition.
The flotilla’s mission is not only to deliver crucial aid but also to bring international attention to these harrowing conditions. Palestinian activist Saif Abukeshek, part of the flotilla’s spokespersons, condemned Israeli policies as deliberate ethnic cleansing.
“Palestinians are being starved to death by a government purposefully inflicting starvation,” he said. “The regime bombs hospitals, schools, and families daily with the intention to kill as many Palestinians as possible.”
As the flotilla sets sail, thousands of supporters continue to rally in cities like Genoa, where 40,000 people marched in solidarity and accompanied aid shipments to embarkation points. The convoy is expected to arrive in Gaza around mid-September, pending safe passage through contested waters.
The Global Sumud Flotilla embodies the perseverance and resolve of international activists to break physical and political barriers in support of the Palestinian people’s right to life and dignity. Amid the silence or complicity of many governments, the mission shines as a beacon of transnational solidarity and resistance against what organizers describe as a campaign of extermination.
This humanitarian effort underlines the urgency of addressing the Gaza crisis and challenges the international community to act decisively before more lives are lost.
