Human Rights group Adalah reported on May 5 severe psychological abuses and death threats against two Global Flotilla Sumud activists, detained in an Israeli prison.

Lawyers from the Adalah organization, who visited the detainees, confirmed this Tuesday that two activists from Spain and Brazil have been subjected to coercive interrogations lasting up to eight hours.

Thiago Ávila, the Brazilian activist, explicitly recounted that his interrogators threatened him with being “assassinated” or enduring “one hundred years in prison.” These alarming accounts highlight the extreme pressure and psychological tactics reportedly employed against the activists during their detention.

Adalah further detailed the egregious conditions of their confinement, stressing the activists are held in cells with high-intensity lighting maintained twenty-four hours a day.

Ávila specifically denounced being held in intensely cold temperatures, adding to the harshness of their environment. Additionally, both activists are blindfolded every time they are moved outside their cells, even during mandatory medical examinations. This practice, a form of sensory deprivation, compounds their distress.

As of Monday, the detainees had completed their sixth day without consuming any food, undertaking a hunger strike in protest of their dire situation and treatment.

During a subsequent hearing at the Ashkelon tribunal, the Israeli regime prosecution levied serious charges against the pair, including “aiding the enemy in times of war” and belonging to “terrorist organizations.” However, the defense counsel vigorously rejected these accusations, fundamentally questioning the State’s jurisdiction. They argued that the activists’ apprehension constituted an “illegal kidnapping”, asserting it occurred unequivocally outside Israeli territorial waters.

Despite the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally denying the use of physical violence, the defense lawyers insisted that multiple testimonies exist documenting severe beatings and other forms of physical abuse, which they equate to torture, occurring during the initial maritime transfer.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, an initiative carrying critical humanitarian supplies, aimed to breach the prolonged and severe blockade that Israel has imposed on the Gaza Strip since 2007. This blockade has had devastating consequences, creating an extreme scarcity of essential resources within the Palestinian territory.

The Israeli Government maintains stringent control over all entry points into Gaza, and has, on numerous occasions, unilaterally cut off vital aid, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The plight of these activists starkly underscores the escalating tensions and severe human rights violations inherent in the context of the ongoing siege of Gaza.

This incident, involving the detention and reported abuse of international activists attempting to provide succor, draws global attention to the broader framework of international law and the rights of oppressed populations.

The efforts of the Global Flotilla Sumud resonate deeply with the principle of anti-colonial solidarity, challenging the oppressive siege and advocating for the fundamental rights of those suffering under occupation.
