England defeated Croatia 4-2 today at Dallas Stadium in Texas during an action-packed Group L opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 to secure three points and lead the group standings.
The England national football team kicked off their tournament campaign this June 17, with a decisive victory, which places the team managed by German coach Thomas Tuchel at the top of Group L with three points, establishing their status as strong title contenders.
Harry Kane scored twice as Thomas Tuchel’s side secured a 4-2 victory, establishing themselves as Group L leaders ahead of the Ghana and Panama matchup.

The high-intensity match saw the English squad take the lead twice, only for a resilient Croatian side to equalize on both occasions. The match began with intense high pressure from Croatia, who found early offensive depth through winger Ivan Perisic. However, in the 18th minute, veteran Croatian captain Luka Modric committed a clear foul inside the penalty box against English attacker Noni Madueke.
English captain Harry Kane executed the penalty, which was initially saved by Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened and ordered a repetition because the goalkeeper stepped off his goal line early.
Dynamic First Half
On his second attempt in the 11th minute, Harry Kane blasted the ball into the same corner to establish a 1-0 lead. The early advantage allowed England to control the pitch, finding open spaces through the right wing where Noni Madueke dominated.
Despite the defeat, the Balkan team displayed strong competitive spirit in Dallas and they responded with structured teamwork. In the 35th minute, Luka Modric assisted Petar Sucic, who passed back to Martin Baturina. The talented midfielder quickly shot past English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to equalize.
The parity did not last long. In the 42nd minute, Declan Rice delivered a precise corner kick, enabling Harry Kane to score his second goal with a powerful header. Yet, Croatia responded before halftime when Petar Musa scored a volley.
English Dominance Secured
Immediately after the break, in the 46th minute, Jude Bellingham spearheaded a fast counter-attack and scored a crossed shot to make it 3-2. England dominated the second half, though Dominik Livakovic made several brilliant saves.
In the 84th minute, Thomas Tuchel made strategic substitutions that secured the final victory. A rapid transition orchestrated by Bukayo Saka allowed substitute Marcus Rashford to cut inside and score the fourth goal with a precise low shot.
With his two goals today, 32-year-old striker Harry Kane reached 10 goals in 12 career appearances. This historical milestone ties him with legend Gary Lineker as the all-time top English goalscorer in the tournament’s history.
This decisive triumph places England as the temporary leader of Group L with three points. The group stage continues tonight as Ghana faces Panama in Toronto, Canada, to complete the first round of fixtures.
Under the new tournament rules, finishing as the leader of Group L is highly advantageous, as the top two teams from Group L will advance to the round of 32. In the next round, scheduled for June 23, England will face Ghana in Boston while Croatia meets Panama in Toronto.
The English team aims to build on this opening victory as they pursue their second historical world title, while Croatia seeks to replicate or surpass their brilliant historical campaigns, which include finishing third in Qatar 2022 and reaching the final in Russia 2018.
Road To Playoffs
The action in Group L continues tonight as Ghana faces Panama at the stadium in Toronto, Canada. These two squads are considered the lower-ranked teams in the group and are expected to fight intensely to secure a spot in the direct elimination rounds as one of the best third-place finishers.
Under the new 48-team tournament format, the two top-ranked teams from each of the 12 groups will automatically advance to the round of 32. In addition, the eight best third-place teams across the entire tournament will also progress to the playoffs, while the fourth-placed team in each group will be immediately eliminated.
