The U.S. Department of War is concealing the true number of U.S. military casualties in the ongoing conflict with Iran, according to a report published by The Intercept.

Citing anonymous officials, the investigation reveals that an estimated 750 service members have been killed or wounded in West Asia since October 2023, a figure far higher than official disclosures. Internal sources within the U.S. Central Command (Centcom) describe the handling of casualty data as a deliberate cover-up, accusing the military of relying on outdated and incomplete information.

A Pentagon official told The Intercept that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and the White House are enforcing a strict secrecy regime around the true toll of the conflict.

The investigation places the number of confirmed U.S. military deaths at a minimum of 15 – a statistic Centcom refuses to formally acknowledge. The report further documents that the number of wounded has surpassed 520 service members. This figure includes 200 sailors who suffered smoke inhalation and other injuries during a fire aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.

The journalistic investigation confirms that Iranian missile and drone attacks have repeatedly targeted U.S. military installations across the region, including bases in Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates.

The report concludes that the Trump administration’s policy of deliberate opacity makes it impossible to ascertain the full scope of Washington’s material and human losses in the region.
