Colombia and Costa Rica will strengthen intelligence-sharing and security cooperation against drug trafficking and organized crime.
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella and Costa Rican President Laura Fernández Delgado are meeting Tuesday in Barranquilla for talks on security, drug trafficking and transnational organized crime, with intelligence-sharing between their police forces expected to be a central focus.

The meeting, agreed during a conversation between the two presidents, is intended to strengthen cooperation against criminal organizations operating across the region.
The two governments are expected to discuss mechanisms for coordinating efforts against international drug trafficking and other crimes that cross their borders. This could include closer coordination among their security institutions and the exchange of police intelligence on drug trafficking and organized crime.
Costa Rican Security Minister Gerald Campos, who is part of Fernández’s delegation, said the talks would focus on sharing information and developing strategies with neighboring countries.
“The idea is to share information and establish strategies because we want alliances with neighboring countries to continue confronting this criminal activity,” Campos said.

Campos said Costa Rica was seeking an “alliance for cooperation, intelligence analysis and information-sharing among police forces” as part of a broader agenda Fernández is taking to her meeting with de la Espriella.
The Costa Rican delegation also includes Justice Minister Gabriel Aguilar, Communications Minister Arnold Zamora and intelligence chief Pablo Martínez. Colombia has not yet announced which officials will meet with the Costa Rican delegation.
The talks will continue through Wednesday. No specific agreements have been announced so far, and no details have been provided on measures that could emerge from Tuesday’s meeting.
Both Colombia and Costa Rica occupy strategic positions along drug-trafficking routes, with routes extending toward both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
The meetings are intended to advance security cooperation between the two countries, particularly through intelligence analysis and the sharing of information between their police forces.
