Exercises aimed at counterterrorism took place Sept. 8-9 in shared frontier zone.

Between Sept. 8 and 9, China, Russia and Mongolia carried out the exercise “Border Cooperation-2025,” the first joint military maneuvers organized by the border defense forces of the three countries.

Conducted in a shared border area, the drill’s goal is “to strengthen trilateral strategic interaction, enhance capabilities to counter border security threats, and build mutual trust and friendship,” Chinese military authorities stated.

During the maneuvers, the three sides established a joint command post on Chinese territory, which operated on the principle “Whoever is on whose territory leads, with multilateral coordination and parallel command.”

Activities included joint reconnaissance operations, blockades, coordinated strikes, damage control and the handover of suspects, among others.

Chinese authorities said the goal of the exercise was to “raise the level of strategic coordination, strengthen response capacity against border security threats and consolidate mutual trust,” while also testing a new model of border cooperation.

After the exercise concluded, representatives from the three countries exchanged experiences on border management and control mechanisms.

The joint military exercise seeks to “demonstrate pragmatic cooperation and deepen the traditional friendship” among the three neighboring countries, Chinese authorities said.
