Red Cross prepares to assist with hostage releases and humanitarian aid.

On Friday, China stressed the need to achieve as soon as possible a comprehensive and permanent cease-fire in Gaza to effectively ease the humanitarian crisis and reduce tensions in the region.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said his country “advocates upholding the principle of ‘Palestine governed by the Palestinians’ and promoting the implementation of the ‘two-state solution.’”

“China is willing to work together with the international community to reach a comprehensive, just, and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, and to continue contributing to peace and stability in the Middle East,” he said.

Israel and Hamas signed a peace agreement for Gaza that was approved Thursday night by the Israeli government. The deal includes a cease-fire in the enclave, which took effect upon ratification.

According to the agreement, the Israeli occupation forces will withdraw to the so-called “yellow line” within the first 24 hours, meaning Israel will retain control over 53% of the territory.

Since the beginning of the Israeli offensive against Gaza in October 2023, China has expressed its “dismay” over Israeli attacks on civilians and has repeatedly reaffirmed its support for the “two-state solution.”

Also on Friday, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) called for the safe release of hostages and detainees, to take place following the cease-fire signed between Hamas and Israel.

“The ICRC teams in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank will support the agreement’s implementation by helping reunite hostages and detainees with their families. We are also prepared to assist in the return of human remains so that families can mourn their loved ones with dignity,” ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric said.

She added that the Red Cross, with more than 150 years of experience assisting in conflicts, is also ready to support the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza “and ensure its safe distribution to those who need it most.”

“The coming days will be decisive. I urge all parties to uphold their commitments,” Spoljaric said, adding that the cease-fire “must mark a turning point after two years of unimaginable horror.”
