“Maria Paula Gimenez and Lucas Ezequiel Aguilera, participants in the Sumud Convoy who were detained on May 24 in Sirte, were expelled from Eastern Libya,” he posted on X.

The release of the activists was made possible through efforts by international institutions, including the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

On May 24, Gimenez and Aguilera were detained near Sirte, a city located on the dividing line between western and eastern Libya.

They were traveling with eight other activists from Spain, Italy, the United States, Poland, Portugal, Uruguay, and Tunisia, who had departed overland from Mauritania with the intention of reaching Gaza.

The activists, who were traveling with another 190 people of various nationalities, were arrested for “entering the territory without completing legal procedures,” according to authorities at the time. Officials confirmed the detentions two days after their companions lost contact with them.

On Tuesday, one day before the one-month anniversary of the arrest, Benghazi’s Foreign Ministry said that the necessary legal and administrative procedures had been initiated for the deportation of the Argentine activists.
