On Friday, Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw in their Group B opener of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the packed Toronto Stadium, setting an intense tone for the tournament.
Under the guidance of head coach Jesse Marsch, the Canadian national team sought to dominate ball possession from the starting minutes. However, the North American side struggled to break through a highly organized European defensive block.
The first major opportunity fell to striker Jonathan David, who capitalized on a loose rebound inside the penalty box but sent his shot over the crossbar.

Conversely, the European squad capitalized on physical play and set-pieces. In the 20th minute, Bosnia-Herzegovina opened the scoring. Midfielder Ivan Bašić delivered a precise corner kick that defender Sead Kolasinac deflected at the near post.
The ball found forward Jovo Lukic unmarked near the goal line, allowing him to score with a precise header, securing a 1-0 advantage for the visitors.
Larin Rescues Canada
The second half delivered high-intensity actions as both teams engaged in a dynamic, open-ended exchange. Early in the period, Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj made a crucial save, and Sead Kolasinac executed a dramatic goal-line clearance to deny Canadian defender Richie Laryea, whose deflected effort struck the crossbar. Immediately afterward, Bosnia responded with a dangerous counterattack where striker Ermedin Demirovic failed to beat Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau in a decisive one-on-one situation.
As the match progressed, Canada intensified its offensive pressure, exposing gaps in the Bosnian defense. Bosnian defender Nikola Katić made an outstanding clearance on the goal line to prevent substitute Tani Oluwaseyi from scoring. Finally, the Canadian pressure yielded results in the 78th minute. Striker Promise David delivered a precise assist to Cyle Larin, who skillfully bypassed his defender at the edge of the penalty area and fired a low right-footed shot into the net to make it 1-1.
With this result, both nations earn 1 point in Group B. The other two teams in the group, Qatar and Switzerland, will face each other on Saturday. In the next round of fixtures, June 18, Bosnia-Herzegovina will play against Switzerland in Los Angeles, while Canada will face Qatar in Vancouver, in what promises to be a decisive double-header for the group standings.
