On Wednesday, Argentina’s labor federations and social organizations called for a march to Congress to support pensioners and reject far-right President Javier Milei.

The protest is being held under slogans focused on defending the pension system, improving pension benefits, and rejecting Milei’s austerity policies, including the closure of the “Back to Work”, a social program for informal workers.

The demonstrations in Buenos Aires were called by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the Argentine Workers’ Central Union (CTA), the Autonomous CTA, and the Union of Workers of the Popular Economy (UTEP).

Since early Wednesday morning, the Federal Police have deployed an operation at the Pueyrredon Bridge, one of the main access routes to the capital from the south, in an attempt to clear a road blockade set up by protesters, leading to tense confrontations.

The Buenos Aires protest is being replicated in other cities across Argentina and is the first since the demonstration held on April 30, on the eve of Labor Day, which also focused on denouncing Milei’s measures against workers.

In February, he approved a labor reform that introduced changes to working conditions and that labor unions consider a setback to decades of gains achieved by Argentine workers.

Wednesday’s protest marks the beginning of a new phase of labor demands, according to union leaders, who have not ruled out additional industrial action, including a general strike.
