A violent shootout in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood of Montreal, Canada, left this Monday three people dead, including a police officer, a civilian and the armed suspect.

The Montreal Police (Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal, SPVM) deployed a large-scale tactical operation in the morning hours of June 22 following reports of gunshots.

The confrontation resulted in the tragic deaths of a local civilian, a responding security officer and the main attacker. Another female police officer suffered injuries during the gunfight but is currently out of danger in a local hospital.

To guarantee public safety, security forces urged residents to avoid the area as the situation remained unstable. The emergency operation forced the immediate closure of a nearby metro station to protect commuters from stray bullets. Additionally, the Quebec Ministry of Transportation closed several sections of the Décarie highway and other major arterial roads in the city center to facilitate the transit of emergency vehicles.

The emergency began when a concerned citizen called 911 to report an individual armed with a long rifle. The suspect was positioned at a window of the Hilton Hotel overlooking the Décarie highway. When patrol cars arrived at the designated quadrant, the attacker opened fire on the officers in public, triggering an immediate and intense shootout.

The suspect, who wore military-style clothing, was killed at the scene during the exchange of gunfire. Police Director Fadi Daguerre described the event as “a nightmare and a tragedy for the entire community.” The official noted that the city of Montreal had not lost a police officer in the line of duty since 2002, making this event one of the worst scenarios for local law enforcement.

Officers established extended security zones to protect local families and ensure there were no other active threats.

Following the deaths of both the officer and the suspect, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) assumed control of the legal procedure. The independent watchdog is collaborating with an external police force to conduct an impartial investigation. This parallel inquiry aims to determine the exact motivations behind the lethal attack and analyze the tactical response.

Director Fadi Daguerre urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified rumors on social media platforms. The official reiterated the commitment of the security forces to restoring public order and protecting the residents of the city. Meanwhile, local authorities are planning a memorial to honor the fallen officer who died while protecting the community.
