Some 100 U.S. soldiers are being deployed to Nigeria as part of increased military cooperation to fight insecurity in the West African country.

Nigeria confirmed on February 16 through Samaila Uba, Nigeria’s Defense Headquarters spokesman, the arrival of one hundred United States military personnel at the Bauchi aerodrome in the country’s northwest. This deployment is part of a bilateral defense cooperation program, following a formal request from Abuja to Washington.

The Nigerian Defense Headquarters (DHQ) stated that this collaboration will provide Nigeria with access to specialized technical capabilities.

“The collaboration will provide access to specialized technical capabilities aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to deter terrorist threats and enhance protection of vulnerable communities throughout the country”, indicated the DHQ in a recent statement.

These tools are intended to bolster Nigeria’s ability to deter terrorist threats and protect vulnerable communities across the nation.

The U.S. presence was planned after the Nigerian Government formally requested training and technical assistance and intelligence exchange with members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

In this sense, the DHQ emphasized that the U.S. personnel are technical specialists, not combat forces, with advisory roles focused on effectively identifying and neutralizing extremist terrorist groups destabilizing the country.

This arrival of U.S. advisors occurs amidst a growing presence of China and Russia on the African continent, as the United States seeks to regain influence in the territory with governments aligned with its policies.

Nigeria has been facing a severe security crisis for years, with frequent attacks by armed gangs, involved in robbery and kidnapping for ransom, reported in various regions of the center and northwest.

According to official figures and UN data, these groups have caused the death of over 35,000 people and displaced around 2.7 million, primarily within Nigeria, but also in neighboring countries such as Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.
